I was a lot like you. I
wasn’t
always a successful writer, editor and communications consultant indeed
I failed school English – twice!
At the age of 17 I was
desperate. I
was basically locked in my room, with a cat for company (and you know
how uncaring cats can be), banned from going anywhere until I passed
that English exam. I just couldn’t get my head
around all
those rules of grammar, spelling, punctuation and concentrate on

When I was given an essay
subject I
would stare at the typewriter and the blank piece of paper. Ok so
things have come on from then and you can stare at a blank computer
screen for hours now but the fear is still the same. I was frozen by
fear and anyone reading this has probably felt the same. I now know
that this fear is born out of frustration of not being able to use a
major communications method but I didn’t know that then. Then
I
had to get it written if I ever wanted to see friends, TV or daylight
again!
I didn’t have a
problem with
other subjects. Maths I got, sciences were great and IT would have been
easy if it wasn’t the 1970s! Even English Literature was ok
but,
for some reason essay writing was sheer torture which is why I kept
failing (in those days you were allowed to fail at school –
nowadays you simply don’t succeed to sufficient standard).
I was also rubbish at
languages and equally bad at French and German so maybe that part of my
brain isn’t that great. So
how did I become an award-winning writer, magazine editor and
communications consultant?
The answer is
the Writing Workshop.

professional magazine job came in 1983. I then became a magazine editor
in 1985.
